I love to eat this variety while working in the garden. I find that the skin is so thin while they are young and they have a mildly sweet flavour that I love. Mature fruit green has yellow striping, smooth skin with slight ribbing and black spines. White flesh, early maturing and high fruit set.

Armstrong Early Cluster cucumber is a heritage variety steeped in history and flavor. This venerable cucumber variety, one of the oldest still under cultivation, is cherished by gardeners and chefs alike for its unique qualities and enduring legacy.

A Rich History:
First documented in the “Dictionarium botanicum” in 1728, the Armstrong Early Cluster cucumber holds a special place in the annals of horticulture. Its long-standing presence in gardens across generations speaks to its resilience and enduring appeal.

Unique Characteristics:
Unlike your typical cucumbers, the Armstrong Early Cluster is known for its distinctive growing habits. These cucumbers usually grow in clusters at the base of vining plants, making them a fascinating addition to any garden. They are highly sought after for pickling due to their ideal size and taste. With a notable resistance to drought and diseases, they represent a perfect blend of hardiness and flavor.

Growth and Harvest:
Often grown as a climbing plant despite its classification as a bush variety, these cucumbers produce small fruits, typically about 1.5 x 5 inches when fully mature. Their size makes them perfect for pickling. Gardeners should note the importance of regular harvesting, as the cucumbers mature quickly and are best picked before they become overly seedy. Even as they age, their low bitterness ensures they remain a versatile ingredient in the kitchen.

Quick to Maturity:
One of the standout features of the Armstrong Early Cluster cucumber is its quick maturation period. Ready for harvest in just about 50 days, these cucumbers are perfect for gardeners eager to enjoy the fruits of their labor without a long wait.

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a culinary enthusiast, the Armstrong Early Cluster cucumber offers a delightful glimpse into the world of heirloom vegetables. With its rich history, unique characteristics, and ease of cultivation, this cucumber variety is not just a plant, but a piece of living history ready to flourish in your garden.
