Del Tonet is a traditional Catalan hanging tomato originating in Preixens, in the comarca of La Noguera, Catalonia, Spain. Known locally as tomàquet de penjar d’en Tonet, this variety belongs to a distinctive group of tomatoes traditionally grown to provide fresh tomato flavour long after the summer growing season has ended.

The name tomàquet de penjar translates to “hanging tomato” in Catalan. These tomatoes were selected for their ability to keep after harvest, allowing families to preserve part of the summer crop well into winter without canning or refrigeration. Rather than being eaten immediately after picking, the fruits were traditionally gathered into bunches, threaded onto strings and hung in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. This simple storage method helped extend the availability of tomatoes for months beyond the growing season.

Origin and Catalan Food Traditions

Catalonia has a long tradition of growing locally adapted tomatoes for different culinary purposes. While many varieties are primarily grown for fresh summer eating, tomàquets de penjar developed around a different need: maintaining a supply of tomatoes through the colder months, when fresh garden produce was limited.

Del Tonet comes from Preixens in the province of Lleida, within the agricultural region of La Noguera. Its exact age has not been documented, but it belongs to this established Catalan tradition of locally maintained hanging tomatoes. These varieties are valued not only for their flavour but also for the practical qualities that made them useful in traditional household food storage.

The fruits are small, round and distinctly pointed at the blossom end. They have juicy flesh, relatively few seeds, an intense tomato flavour and slow, progressive ripening. Their excellent post-harvest keeping ability is one of their defining characteristics.

Fruit and Storage Qualities

Del Tonet produces clusters of small tomatoes with a characteristic pointed tip. The plants can continue flowering and setting fruit well into the upper growth, contributing to their productive clusters.

Unlike tomatoes bred primarily for immediate consumption, Del Tonet is valued for what happens after harvest. The fruits ripen gradually and can be stored for an extended period when harvested and kept under suitable conditions. Traditionally, hanging tomatoes such as Del Tonet were picked as their colour began to change, then allowed to continue developing during storage.

For long-term keeping, harvest timing and storage conditions matter. Fruits intended for hanging should be sound and undamaged, with the crop harvested in dry conditions where possible. Keep the tomatoes in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location and check them periodically, removing any fruit that deteriorates. Storage life varies with growing conditions, harvest maturity and the environment in which the tomatoes are kept.

This gradual ripening and extended availability make Del Tonet particularly interesting for gardeners who want more than a short summer harvest. Instead of having every tomato reach full ripeness at once, the stored crop can provide tomatoes for use over the months that follow.

Traditional Culinary Use: Pa amb Tomàquet

One of the most important traditional uses for hanging tomatoes is pa amb tomàquet, the iconic Catalan dish of bread rubbed with tomato. Simple in its ingredients, it relies heavily on the quality and texture of the tomato.

To prepare it, cut a ripe hanging tomato in half and rub the cut surface directly onto a slice of rustic bread, traditionally toasted. The juicy flesh and pulp are worked into the bread, leaving behind the skin. Finish with extra-virgin olive oil and salt. Garlic may also be rubbed onto the bread before the tomato is added.

For the traditional preparation, the tomato is cut across the middle, parallel to the stem, so that the internal chambers open and release their juice and flesh onto the bread. Hanging tomatoes are especially suited to this use because their flavour and texture develop during storage, making them excellent for rubbing into bread.

In Catalonia, pa amb tomàquet may be served at breakfast, as a snack, alongside cured meats and cheeses, or as part of a larger meal. Although the ingredients are uncomplicated, it remains a defining part of Catalan food culture.

More Than a Bread Tomato

Del Tonet is also suitable for sauces, cooked dishes and everyday meals where an intense tomato flavour is desired. Stored tomatoes can be grated, crushed or incorporated into recipes when fresh tomatoes are no longer available from the garden. Their concentrated flavour makes them useful for adding tomato character to dishes throughout the colder months.

The traditional hanging method represents a practical approach to seasonal food preservation: grow and harvest tomatoes in summer, then retain a supply for later use. For gardeners interested in historical food crops, Del Tonet offers a direct connection between a distinctive regional tomato and the culinary traditions that helped preserve it.

A Traditional Longkeeper Worth Growing

Del Tonet combines several useful characteristics in one variety: small, pointed fruits, juicy flesh, relatively few seeds, intense flavour, gradual ripening and very good post-harvest storage. Its connection to Preixens and the Catalan tomàquet de penjar tradition gives it particular interest for collectors of regional heirlooms and gardeners exploring historical methods of keeping food.

The appeal of Del Tonet extends beyond the harvest itself. It represents a way of growing and using tomatoes that does not end when the plants stop producing. A crop harvested at the end of summer can continue to contribute to the kitchen through winter, preserving a little of the garden’s flavour for the months when fresh tomatoes are no longer growing outside.
