Reverend Morrow’s Long Keeper is a rare heirloom tomato from Louisiana, USA, with a unique history and an enduring reputation among storage tomato varieties. According to tradition, the variety was first shared with Reverend Morrow by enslaved people he had helped; in gratitude, they gave him seed of this exceptional tomato. Generations later, it still carries his name and is valued for its unusual ability to store for months after harvest, earning the title of a “long keeper.”

The plants are typically determinate to semi-determinate in habit, producing compact bushes that set clusters of medium-sized fruit. Individual tomatoes usually weigh between 6–10 ounces (180–300 g) and are slightly round to oblate in shape. Their skin is unusually thick and firm, an important trait that contributes to their extraordinary shelf life. Fruits begin green, ripen to a pale whitish hue, then shift to orange and finally to a pinkish-red or reddish-orange at full maturity. The dense flesh is less watery than standard slicing tomatoes, making it more resistant to breakdown and spoilage in storage.

Harvest generally begins about 78–85 days from transplanting. Many growers recommend picking the fruits when they first show a blush of colour rather than when fully ripe; stored this way in a cool, dark place, the tomatoes will continue to ripen gradually off the vine while retaining their firmness and flavour. Under good conditions, Reverend Morrow’s Long Keeper has been reported to last for five months or more, with one grower documenting storage for up to 235 days—nearly eight months—without significant loss of quality.

While the flavour is milder than the rich, juicy burst of summer heirlooms, these tomatoes remain pleasantly sweet and balanced, making them especially useful in winter cooking. They are well suited for sauces, soups, roasting, or slicing into hearty meals long after the garden season has ended. The trade-off for their long storage ability is somewhat modest yields compared to more vigorous varieties, but the ability to eat your own tomatoes well into winter makes them a prized addition to any collection focused on food security.

Reverend Morrow’s Long Keeper is more than just a tomato; it is part of American heirloom history, connecting cultural heritage with practical gardening value. Its resilience, longevity, and story of survival make it an outstanding choice for gardeners who value tradition, preservation, and the security of having fresh homegrown tomatoes through the colder months.
