Red Welsh Onions (Allium fistulosum) are a versatile and attractive addition to any garden. Known for their striking red-purple bulb bases and hollow green leaves, these onions do not form large bulbs but grow in dense clumps that can be harvested continually throughout the season.
They thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, flourishing in temperate climates with ease. Their mild, slightly sweet flavour makes them ideal for fresh use in salads, garnishes, stir-fries, and soups.
As a perennial, Red Welsh Onions will return year after year and can be propagated by dividing the clumps. They also produce attractive greenish-white flowers that support pollinators in your garden.
I received these seeds from a seed saver from the Seed Saver Exchange.
Planting:
Start seeds indoors in late winter or early spring, as they germinate best in cooler conditions (around 10–20°C / 50–70°F).
Sow seeds ¼” deep in seed trays or pots. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost, spacing 6–8″ apart in rows 12–18″ apart.
Soil & Light:
Thrive in full sun to partial shade.
Prefer well-draining soil rich in organic matter.
Tolerant of a wide range of soils but avoid excessive moisture to prevent rot.
Care & Maintenance:
Water regularly during dry periods, keeping soil slightly moist.
Fertilise lightly with compost or balanced fertiliser to encourage steady growth.
Remove flower stalks if you want to prolong edible leaf production.
Harvesting:
Can be harvested year-round, even in winter in mild climates.
Young leaves and stems can be used like scallions; mature clumps and offsets can be used like leeks.
Perennial: produces offsets for ongoing harvest; clumps may continue producing for several years.
Propagation:
Can be grown from seeds, divisions, or offsets.
Dividing clumps every few years helps maintain vigour and productivity.
