Gold Nugget is a cherry tomato variety developed in the early 1980s by Dr. James R. Baggett at Oregon State University. Introduced in 1983, it was bred to perform well in cooler climates and short growing seasons. This determinate bush-type tomato produces compact plants that set fruit reliably, even in less-than-ideal conditions. Gold Nugget has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its consistent performance and excellent tomato flavour.
Plants produce clusters of bright golden-yellow cherry tomatoes weighing about 15–20 grams each. The fruit is sweet, mild, and well-balanced, with a rich, true tomato flavour. Early-ripening and prolific, Gold Nugget provides dependable harvests where many other varieties struggle.
For best results, grow in full sun with well-draining, fertile soil. Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost and transplant seedlings once danger of frost has passed. Support the bush-type plants with stakes or cages, water consistently, and harvest fruit frequently to encourage continued production.
These seeds are available directly from Garden Faerie Botanicals in the heart of British Columbia, Canada. The collection features heirloom and heritage seeds that are personally cultivated organically without the use of any chemicals. Emphasizing historical, rare, non-GMO seeds, this selection preserves biodiversity through open-pollination.
