African Super Chufa Nut (Cyperus esculentus)

African Super chufa is a cultivated form of chufa, also known as tiger nut or earth almond, selected for its larger, more robust tubers and strong overall productivity. It belongs to the species Cyperus esculentus, a grass-like sedge that has been grown as a food crop in Africa and the Mediterranean for thousands of years. African Super represents a modern-named selection derived from traditional African-growing types rather than a wild form.

This variety produces vigorous plants with narrow, upright leaves and develops sizeable underground tubers beneath the soil surface. Compared to standard chufa, African Super is noted for producing noticeably larger tubers, often more elongated and heavier, making harvesting and processing easier. The tubers are dense and firm, with a naturally sweet, nutty flavour commonly compared to coconut or almond, despite not being a nut.

African Super chufa is used in the same traditional and modern ways as other chufa varieties. Tubers can be soaked and eaten fresh, dried for storage, ground into flour, or blended into plant-based milks and beverages. They are also suitable for baking, fermenting, or pressing for oil. Nutritionally, chufa is valued for its high fibre content, resistant starch, and beneficial fats, and it is naturally gluten-free. Once dried, the tubers store exceptionally well without refrigeration, making them a practical long-term food crop.

In the garden, African Super chufa is grown as a warm-season crop. Tubers are planted after all danger of frost has passed and soils have warmed. Plants prefer full sun and well-drained soil and tolerate dry conditions once established. Harvest takes place in autumn after the foliage yellows and dies back, when tubers have fully matured.

Although Cyperus esculentus is widely known as a weed in its wild form, cultivated varieties such as African Super have been selected for food production rather than aggressive spread. When grown intentionally and harvested thoroughly, it is manageable in garden beds or containers. Saving tubers from the harvest allows growers to maintain their own planting stock year after year.

African Super chufa is not a true nut and is unrelated to almonds or tree nuts. It is an ancient food plant adapted to challenging conditions, offering reliable yields, excellent storage potential, and versatile culinary uses. This variety is especially well suited to growers interested in resilient crops, traditional foods, and practical food security plants.
