French Horticultural Bean (French Heirloom Strain)

This bean was received from a seed saver who referred to it simply as “French Heirloom.” Based on its growth habit, pod use, and distinctive seed colouring, it aligns closely with traditional French horticultural–type beans, a well-known class of European heirloom beans valued for their versatility and flavour.

French horticultural beans were historically grown throughout France and western Europe as essential kitchen and storage beans. They were selected not for uniformity or industrial production, but for reliability, adaptability, and usefulness across the growing season. As a result, many were passed down locally with informal names, and exact variety names were often lost over generations of seed saving.

This variety is a true dual-purpose bean. The pods can be harvested young and used as fresh green beans, or left to mature and shelled for plump, flavourful beans. Fully mature dry beans store extremely well and are excellent for winter cooking, soups, stews, and traditional European dishes such as cassoulet.

Plants grow as vigorous bush types with some runner or half-runner habit, a common trait in older heirloom beans developed for home gardens rather than strict bush or pole classifications.

Pods are green when fresh. The mature seeds are especially striking, deep purple to dark in colour with beige or cream mottling. Some natural variation in seed pattern may occur from year to year, which is typical and expected in heritage bean strains and does not affect performance or quality.

This bean represents the kind of variety that sustained households for generations: productive, adaptable, flavourful, and dependable. Preserving and growing beans like this helps keep living agricultural history in circulation.
