The name itself, meaning “Queen of the North,” reflects its reputation as a variety bred for challenging northern conditions. It traveled into North American seed circles more recently, appearing in small heirloom catalogs around 2014, but it has long been valued in its homeland for reliability in short seasons.
Unlike sprawling tomato vines that need constant staking, Northern Queen grows as a compact, bushy plant, usually only 50–70 cm (20–28 inches) tall. This makes it ideal for gardeners with limited space, container growers, or anyone working with greenhouses and northern gardens where season length is precious.
Northern Queen is considered an early to mid-season variety, with 80 days to harvest.
