Belgian Perennial Leek (Oerprei)

$6.00

Grows easily and stays fresh through cold winters. Its mild, pleasant flavour makes it a reliable kitchen staple, and it will return each year if some plants are left unharvested. New shoots appear from the base after flowering in mid to late fall. Hardy to zone 4b, this low-maintenance perennial thrives in both garden beds and containers.

Sow seeds 1.5 cm (½”) deep in full sun. Ideal germination occurs at 18–22 °C (65–72 °F) within 10–21 days. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Space plants 15–20 cm (6–8″) apart and add compost or balanced fertilizer during the growing season.

Harvest mature leaves as needed or lift whole plants after the first year, leaving some in the ground to regrow. Hardy to zone 4b.

The Belgian perennial leek, also called Oerprei, is a hardy, low-maintenance leek that regrows year after year. With mild, sweet, onion-like flavour and dark green leaves with pale green to white bases.

Cold-tolerant and suitable for zones 4b and colder, Oerprei thrives in rich, well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade. Once established, it requires minimal maintenance — just occasional weeding and mulching. The plant produces offsets for easy propagation and can flower and set seed if allowed.

Perfect for soups, stews, sautés, salads, or any recipe that calls for mild leeks. Rare. 25 seeds.
