Coldstream Early Golden was shared with Garden Faerie Botanicals by Wayne, whose family grew it in the Coldstream Valley for more than a century. Sturdy stalks reach 5–6 feet, bearing 8–10 inch ears packed with deep golden kernels. When picked young, the ears are sweet, tender, and full of rich old-fashioned corn flavour. Left to mature, they dry down to a handsome yellow dent, excellent for meal or feed.
It likely descends from early northern strains such as Pride of the North, Minnesota 13, or Early Yellow Canada, all renowned around the turn of the century for their short-season adaptability and robust constitution. Approx. 60 days to table use; 90 days to full maturity. Extremely rare. 100 seeds
Some info about the varieties it could be:
Early Yellow Canada is a historic Canadian dent corn developed specifically for short-season and cool-climate growing. It was widely grown in eastern and central Canada in the late 1800s and early 1900s, valued by homesteaders for its ability to mature reliably where summers were brief and unpredictable.
This variety typically produces 5–7 ft stalks with 8–10 inch ears bearing golden-yellow dent kernels. It was commonly used as a dual-purpose corn: harvested young for fresh eating or allowed to fully mature and dry for meal, livestock feed, and storage. While not as sugary as modern sweet corn, it was prized for its rich, full corn flavour and dependable yields.
Early Yellow Canada was often cited alongside other early northern corns such as Pride of the North and Minnesota 13, and many local strains across Canada descended from or were influenced by it. Its genetics contributed to the foundation of numerous regional farm corns adapted to northern latitudes.
Because it bred true, stored well, and performed under cool conditions, Early Yellow Canada became a cornerstone corn for Canadian homesteads before modern hybrids replaced open-pollinated varieties.
