(Solanum melanocerasum / Solanum nigrum complex)
Chichiquelite Huckleberry is an annual plant originating from Mexico, particularly the Sonora region, and is part of the black nightshade group (Solanum nigrum complex). Plants grow upright and bushy, typically reaching 2–4 feet in height, with branching stems and oval to slightly toothed green leaves. Small, white, star-shaped flowers appear in clusters along the stems, followed by clusters of black to dark purple berries.
The berries are edible when fully ripe. Fully black berries can be eaten raw or cooked. Unripe berries and leaves should not be consumed due to the presence of naturally occurring alkaloids. The berries are often used in preserves, jams, and pies, though raw consumption is safe for fully ripe fruit.
Chichiquelite Huckleberry prefers full sun and well-drained soil and is propagated by seed. Seeds germinate in one to three weeks under warm conditions. The plant produces fruit throughout the growing season once established. Because it is part of the nightshade family, care should be taken to avoid consuming unripe berries or leaves.
This plant is valued for its high berry yield and vigorous growth. The berries are small to medium-sized, produced in clusters, and mature in late summer to autumn. Seed saving is possible from fully ripe berries; seeds should be cleaned and dried before storage. Plants may self-seed in favourable conditions.
This isn’t your average berry. The Chichiquelite produces clusters of glossy black berries that ripen to a rich, sweet flavour with a hint of earthiness, far superior to most garden huckleberries.
