This unique seed mix brings together a broad genetic base of Jerusalem Artichokes (Helianthus tuberosus), combining named varieties with open-pollinated stock for resilience and adaptability. Included are Corlis Bolton Haynes, Clearwater, Nakhodka, along with a diverse selection of vigorous plants grown from last year’s saved seed.
By planting this mix, you’re encouraging stronger plants and richer harvests through natural variation. Expect a wide range of tuber shapes, sizes, and skin colours, with excellent eating quality and good storage potential. The diversity also helps improve resistance to pests, diseases, and changing weather.
Added Notes on Variation & New Traits
Jerusalem Artichoke is an out-breeding species with self-incompatibility, meaning plants naturally cross with others rather than self fertilizing. This encourages genetic variation.
There is documented genetic variation among clones in traits such as flowering time (onset and duration), tuber size and shape, and yield.
Because of this, when planting from true seeds (rather than clonal tuber propagation), many plants may “revert” toward more “wild” or ancestral traits—smaller tubers, more irregular shapes, more variation in colour or skin texture, etc.
However, with a batch of about 15 seeds planted, it’s reasonably likely that 1 or 2 of those will express an exceptional new variety—something noticeably different in size, yield, flavour, or appearance—because of the mixing of genetic traits from the named varieties plus your previous year’s seed stock.

This seed mix is ideal for gardeners and growers who enjoy experimenting, selecting, and preserving new varieties. If you plant ~15 seeds, you’ll get a rich tapestry of variation, and possibly one or two plants that stand out as exciting new types worth preserving.
