The Shuswap Highland sunchoke is a new variety developed from a cross between Corlis Bolton Haynes and Clearwater. This selection aims to combine the strengths of both parent varieties, resulting in a sunchoke that is well-suited for northern and interior climates with shorter growing seasons.
🌱 Parent Varieties
Corlis Bolton Haynes: An heirloom variety grown by the Haynes family in Ontario for over a century. It produces large, smooth tubers with a sweet, nutty flavour. The plants reach approximately 6.5 to 8 feet tall and are covered with 1–2 inch diameter yellow blooms from August to September.
Clearwater: A variety originally discovered in Maine, Clearwater is known for its smooth, round tubers that are the most potato-like in appearance among sunchokes. The plants are the shortest variety in my collection. Clearwater has a mild, un-sunchoke-like flavour and is less aggressive in spreading compared to other varieties.

The Shuswap Highland sunchoke inherits the robust yield and distinctive flavour of Corlis Bolton Haynes, combined with the smooth tuber texture and adaptability of Clearwater. This variety is being trialed for its performance in northern climates, with early observations indicating strong growth and promising culinary qualities.
