These sweet peppers were my favourite variety in the 2024 garden. I was amazed at how think and meaty the flesh was. The plants grew abundantly and I am still eating fruit I took off the plants before first frost 2 weeks ago.
The Lesya Sweet Pepper is a unique heirloom variety originally from Ukraine. It’s well-loved for its sweet, rich flavour and heart-shaped, deep red fruits. Its flesh is thick and juicy, ideal for fresh consumption, roasting, and cooking.
The fruits are heart-shaped, typically around 4–6 inches long, and they ripen to a vivid red. The skin is smooth, and the flesh is thick, giving it a satisfying crunch and versatile in the kitchen. It’s delicious raw in salads, roasted, stuffed, or used in various cooked dishes. Some people also dry and grind it to make a sweet pepper powder.
The peppers are usually ready to harvest about 70–90 days after transplanting, when they have turned a deep red colour.
10 seeds per package.
To grow peppers from seed:
Start Indoors: Begin 8-10 weeks before the last frost date.
Prepare Seeds: Soak seeds in warm water for a few hours to speed germination.
Planting: Use seed-starting soil in small pots or trays. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep.
Warmth and Light: Keep soil at 25–30°C (77–86°F). Use a heat mat if needed. Place under grow lights or in a sunny window.
Watering: Keep soil moist, not soggy. Cover with plastic wrap until seedlings appear.
Transplanting: Harden off and plant outdoors after frost, spacing plants 12–24 inches apart in rich, well-draining soil.
Peppers need full sun, regular watering, and fertilizing during growth.
