These peas were almost thrown in the compost pile in early spring as I thought they were too old to germinate. They are from my old collection. Turns out, they were the show stopper pea variety of my spring garden! Beautiful purple, pink, white and a slight tinge of blue flowers on 4- 5 foot tall vines. They need good support due to the height and then the abundant amount of snow peas that grow.
The podded snow peas are sweet and will grow to about 3 inches. They mature in 70 days after planting and are perfect for spring recipes or freezing for winter. They can also be fermented and kept in the refrigerator for longer storage. I was impressed with the high yields and enjoyed eating them raw in the garden.
They handled the heatwave well and were still producing flowers despite the extreme temperatures. Had I been able to water them more, I think they would have kept going.
The seeds are amazing with a brown and burgundy molted look and they will turn brown in storage. I almost wonder if these might be a soup pea.

This heirloom pea variety may be endangered. I received this variety from a seed saver, Mr. Bill Minkey back in 2009 and was looking for info on it besides my own. I could find nothing, so if anyone know more about the history of this heritage pea, I would love to know more! I had a chat with Mr. Minkey on my podcast called “The Seed Keeper”.
