Tisica Longkeeper Tomato – Catalan Hanging Tomato
Tisica, known locally as tomàquet de penjar tísica, is a traditional Catalan longkeeper tomato originating in Vilajuïga, a municipality in Catalonia, northeastern Spain. The name penjar means “to hang” in Catalan, referring to the traditional method of preserving these tomatoes after harvest. Tisica belongs to a distinctive Mediterranean tradition of growing tomatoes specifically for their ability to keep beyond the summer season and provide fruit through the winter months.
Fruit Characteristics
Tisica produces small, round tomatoes with a distinctly pointed tip, weighing approximately 20–30 grams each. The fruits have firm flesh, relatively low moisture content and a dry, meaty texture suited to extended storage. Unlike juicy tomatoes intended for immediate consumption, these fruits are adapted to gradual post-harvest preservation.
The name tísica is associated with the Catalan word for a sickly or thin appearance, a reference traditionally connected with the plant’s comparatively slender growth. This unusual name reflects the local identity of the variety.
Traditional Winter Storage
Catalan hanging tomatoes were historically grown to provide a supply of tomatoes long after fresh garden harvests had ended. Mature fruits were gathered and hung in a dry, sheltered, well-ventilated place, allowing them to remain usable for months. This method helped households preserve tomatoes without refrigeration or canning.
Tisica’s firm, relatively dry flesh makes it particularly suited to this tradition. As the fruits gradually lose moisture during storage, their texture changes and the remaining pulp becomes concentrated. Properly stored hanging tomatoes can provide a valuable winter supply, although the actual storage period depends on fruit condition, maturity and storage conditions.
Culinary Uses
Tisica is particularly suited to pa amb tomàquet, the traditional Catalan dish of bread rubbed with tomato and dressed with olive oil and salt. The firm flesh breaks down when rubbed over toasted bread, releasing its concentrated flavour without making the bread excessively wet.
The fruits can also be used for sauces, cooked dishes and preserves. Their relatively dry flesh makes them useful where a concentrated tomato flavour is preferred over a watery texture.
Plant Characteristics
Tisica is an indeterminate tomato with an approximate maturity of 80 days. Its growth continues throughout the growing season, and the small fruits are produced on plants suited to a traditional outdoor tomato crop. Fruit firmness and keeping quality are its principal characteristics, rather than large fruit size or heavy, juicy flesh.
This Catalan variety is an interesting choice for growers collecting traditional European tomatoes, unusual regional varieties and crops selected for practical food storage. Tisica preserves a distinct part of Catalonia’s agricultural heritage, when the tomato harvest was not simply a summer crop but a source of food that could be kept and enjoyed through winter.
