I acquired this variety from the Seed Savers Exchange Collection Documentation Project. There was no information included and I was drawn to the name.
What a prolific plant! They did very well despite not being watered and growing in poor soil. The lobed shape was the most interesting part of these fruit. A small cute tomato!
The Manchuria tomato, has an intriguing history tied to its origins and characteristics. It is believed to have originated in the region historically known as Manchuria, which is located in the northeast of China and extends into modern-day Russia. It’s not clear how this tomato was developed or introduced to Western gardeners, but it is likely that seeds were collected by plant explorers or traders who traveled to this region.
Appearance: The Manchuria tomato is known for producing medium fruits that are round and slightly flattened. The skin is typically bright red when ripe. There is an interested lobed shape to the fruit.
Flavour: These tomatoes are appreciated for their robust, classic tomato flavour, which is both sweet and tangy, making them excellent for fresh eating, salads, and cooking.
Growth Habit: The plant itself is an indeterminate type, meaning it continues to grow and produce fruit throughout the growing season until killed by frost. It requires staking or caging due to its vining habit.
Growing Conditions: Like most tomatoes, the Manchuria variety thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, fertile soil. Regular watering and fertilization are important, especially as the plants start setting fruit.
Maintenance: Due to its indeterminate growth habit, pruning and support for the Manchuria tomato are crucial to ensure the plant remains healthy and productive throughout the season. Regularly removing suckers and providing sturdy support can help manage its vigorous growth.
The Manchuria tomato is versatile in the kitchen. Its balanced flavour profile makes it suitable for a variety of dishes, including fresh salads, sandwiches, salsas, and cooked in sauces or pastes.
