C. Pepo– The Omaha Pumpkin is a prolific and sweet heirloom variety with a fascinating history. It was originally collected from the Omaha Tribe by Dr. Melvin Gilmore in the early 20th century and later introduced by the Oscar Will Seed Company in 1924. This Native American variety is well-loved for its oblong, cylindrical pumpkins that weigh between 3 and 5 pounds. These pumpkins are ideal for pies, baking, or creating charming Jack o’ Lanterns. The variety matures in just 80 days, making it a reliable choice for gardeners in short-season climates. Its vigorous vines produce abundantly, even under challenging conditions.
The fruits are known for their delightful sweetness and they store well for several months. I harvested my fruit in early September and they lasted until the start of December. I think the excessive heat did not help them out and they were sitting in the garden ready for a long time before I brought them in.
This historic variety showcases natural variability in size and shape, highlighting its deep-rooted connection to Native American agriculture.
