Black Diamond, introduced around 1920, is the cucumber that “stays green.” Across every historical catalogue and modern heirloom listing, it was consistently praised for holding its deep, dark green colour longer than almost any other variety. It is an extra-early White Spine type, adaptable to all soils and regions, thriving almost anywhere.

Burpee 1937: Black Diamond (It Stays Green) — The beautiful thick fruits are 8 in. long and have a rich deep green skin. The flesh is pure white, refreshing and tasty and of the finest quality. Grows well almost everywhere.

Bolgiano, early 1930s: Stays Green or Black Diamond — The cucumber that stays green. The earliest of the White Spine type. Holds its dark green color longer than any variety we know of. Fruits 7 to 8 inches in length, cylindrical, smooth and handsome. Dark green from end to end with little white rays at the blossom end. Flesh white, firm, crisp, very best quality for slicing. Adapted to all sections and soils.

Bolgiano, 1938: Stays Green or Black Diamond — Extra-early White Spine type. Holds its dark green color as long as any variety we know of. Fruits 7 to 8 inches long, cylindrical, smooth and handsome. Dark green from end to end. Vine makes vigorous growth and is an enormous yielder of dark, always green cucumbers. Flesh white, firm, crisp.

Bolgiano, 1946: Stays Green or Black Diamond — Symmetrical fruits of dark green with nearly square ends, 7 to 8 inches long, smooth. Flesh white and crisp.

Sandhill Preservation (modern): Black Diamond — 67 days — Old-fashioned medium dark green cucumber with a long history introduced in 1920.
