American heirloom from the 1920’s. Extra-early White Spine slicing cucumber, 7 to 8 inches long, cylindrical, smooth, with dark green skin sometimes showing faint white rays at the blossom end. Flesh is white, firm, and crisp. Vines are vigorous and heavy-yielding, producing uniform fruit that holds colour longer than most other varieties. Black Diamond, introduced around 1920, is the cucumber that “stays green.” Across every historical catalogue and modern heirloom listing, it was consistently praised for holding its deep, dark green colour longer than almost any other variety. It is an extra-early White Spine type, adaptable to all soils and regions, thriving almost anywhere.

Burpee 1937: Black Diamond (It Stays Green) — The beautiful thick fruits are 8 in. long and have a rich deep green skin. The flesh is pure white, refreshing and tasty and of the finest quality. Grows well almost everywhere.

Bolgiano, early 1930s: Stays Green or Black Diamond — The cucumber that stays green. The earliest of the White Spine type. Holds its dark green color longer than any variety we know of.
