hese seeds will grow into large, creamy-white roots with broad shoulders and a smooth skin. They have a sweet, delicious flavour, which tastes better after the frost.
At the Seed Savers Exchange Heritage Farm taste trials of 18 parsnip varieties, this parsnip finished in the top five for flavour.
The roots are long and substantial, measuring 10–17″ in length, 2–2.5″ wide, and weighing 5–11 oz at the end of the season. The root crown is moderately wide and deep, with only a few forked roots observed in my crop for 2024. No symptoms of canker were seen.
This variety was acquired by Seed Savers Exchange (SSE) from Bountiful Gardens (which went out of business in 2017). It is currently unclear whether it is the same as ‘Offenham Market’.
The Offenham Parsnip heirloom variety originates from England, specifically associated with the Offenham Market area in Worcestershire. It has been grown in the U.S. since at least 1916, but its historical roots trace back to this traditional English market variety.
I kept the roots in damp peat moss over winter, and the last remaining ones were still edible into the spring. Excellent storage potential and food security.
