Phaseolus vulgaris
The Mountaineer Half Runner Bean is an heirloom variety with historical ties to German settlers in the Dutch Fork region of South Carolina. The name “Dutch” in this context comes from “Deutsche,” reflecting its German heritage. Also known as Old Dutch Half Runner, this variety has been grown for generations due to its adaptability, productivity, and excellent flavour.
Half-runner beans, including Mountaineer, are a unique type that combines traits of both bush and pole beans. The plants have a compact growth habit but send out short runners, making them well-suited to small spaces while still benefiting from light trellising.
The pods are medium-green, slightly curved, and about 4 inches long. When young, they are stringless and tender, perfect for fresh eating, canning, or freezing. As they mature, the white seeds inside can be shelled and used in soups or dried for storage.
This variety is highly resistant to heat and drought, making it a reliable choice for diverse growing conditions. While trellising is optional, providing some support can make harvesting easier and may boost yields.
Days to maturity: 55 dtm.
