Piennolo Del Vesuvio Paste Tomato is early to mature, coming in at 65 days! It is known as the ‘hanging tomato of Vesuvius,’ an heirloom selected for centuries from Italy’s volcanic soils. This variety has low water content as a paste tomato & fairly thick skins allow them to be hung, traditionally, for months indoors to extend the season. Their concentrated flavour after even one month of hanging is amazing!
Slightly elongated, red cherry fruits have nipples in their blossom end. They are a little larger than most cherry tomatoes. Five feet tall plants produce many large clusters of fruits.
A very old variety that is native to Campania. I originally searched out this variety as I had read it was the oldest variety in cultivation. I even thought I saw it was from the 1500’s. Not sure where I had seen this and I am glad I did as this is an important variety for food security.
To preserve off the vine for several months, remove the entire clusters when 70% of the fruit are ripe and hang in a cool, well ventilated location.
Hang tomatoes in a cool, dry place to slow down the ripening process.
Store them in a breathable container or mesh bag to maintain air circulation.
With proper care, Piennolo del Vesuvio tomatoes can be stored for up to 9 months after harvest.
