Bulgarian Carrot peppers, also known as “Shipkas,” are a unique heirloom variety from Eastern Europe. They are recognized for their bright orange colour that resembles a small carrot. These peppers are typically around 3 to 4 inches long with a distinctive crunchy texture.
These peppers pack a punch with their heat level that ranges from 5,000 to 30,000 Scoville Heat Units (comparable to jalapeños, but sometimes spicier). I found them to be very hot!! Actually hotter than Jalapenos and they made the most amazing hot sauce!
Bulgarian carrot peppers offer a fruity, slightly citrusy flavour, which makes them excellent for use in salsas, pickling, or hot sauces. Their vibrant colour and heat make them a favorite among home gardeners and hot pepper enthusiasts.
They thrive in warm growing conditions, needing full sun and well-drained soil. Bulgarian Carrot peppers typically mature in 65 days after transplanting. This variety shocked me when I saw the orange is the sea of green! They came in so early and I was very impressed with how productive they were.
